WOMEN'S MENTAL HEALTH PREVENTION CENTRE          NAPLES - ITALY

Brussels, 29 June 2001

Dear Madam,

In the framework of the Belgian presidency of the European Union, we invite you to attend, on 13 September in Brussels, the conference marking the launch of the Fifth Community Action Programme on Community strategy on equal opportunities for men and women.

Equality for women and men in economic life is one of this framework strategy's areas of activity. Actions focus on gender inequalities in the labour market (employment and unemployment rates, job segregation, pay …) and on ways to end them.

On the issue of unequal pay, Belgium, together with other European countries, has been studying the problem for a number of years without managing to even out the acknowledged disparities.

This conference – organised by my department, the Federal Ministry for Employment, Labour and Equal Opportunities, in cooperation with the European Commission – will provide the opportunity to exchange experiences and good practice in this field with the social partners, experts and NGOs, and to prepare the way for future action.

You will find the programme of the day's events, practical information and the registration form among the enclosed documents. The closing date for registrations is 16 July. As the number of places is limited, we advise you to return your completed form as soon as possible, and to look out for your confirmation of registration.

In anticipation of meeting you at this conference, please accept my best wishes.

Yours faithfully,

Laurette Onkelinx

Deputy Prime Minister

Minister of Employment, Labour and Equal Opportunities
